Free electricity and gas market: what do you need to know?
The free market allows you to freely choose your seller of electricity and natural gas, rather than being served with greater protection under the contractual and economic conditions set by the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA).
It gives you greater flexibility because you can:
- find the most convenient solution for you and which best suits your consumption habits;
- choose between fixed or variable price offers;
- add innovative services and solutions for your home and business.

Greater electricity protection service
The greater protection of electricity service is regulated by the economic and contractual conditions defined by ARERA. For non-vulnerable domestic customers it ends on 30 June 2024.
Gas vulnerability protection service
The gas protection service for families and condominiums with supplies for domestic use ended on 31 December 2023.
From 1 January 2024 the protection service* is available for vulnerable customers, i.e. domestic customers who have at least one of these requirements:
- over the age of 75;
- social bonus (art. 1, paragraph 75, law 124/ 17);
- a user in an emergency housing facility;
- disability (art. 3, law 104/92).

If you are a vulnerable customer:
- fill out the form for substitute declaration (not necessary if you have already turned 75);
- return it through one of the contact channels indicated in the form itself.
If you have a contract with a free market offer and want to access the vulnerability protection service, in addition to the substitute declaration you will also have to sign the dedicated offer.
